MATT Renshaw has played his last cricket for Somerset this season, after it was revealed that he had sustained a fractured finger in the defeat to Surrey this week.

The 22-year-old Australian batsman has had a superb campaign, scoring more than 500 County Championship runs at an average of 51.30.

But this injury means that Renshaw - who was due to join up with Australia for their tour of India after Somerset's Championship matches with Essex and Worcestershire - will leave early.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr told the club website: "Sadly for us that means it is the end of his time with Somerset this season.

"It’s a huge blow to us because he has been brilliant both on and off the field.

"He fitted into the dressing room very well and a player of that calibre is going to be missed.

"However, it does create an opportunity for somebody else to come in and step up, so from that point of view it’s quite exciting."

With Marcus Trescothick still sidelined by a broken toe, it leaves Somerset looking a little stretched at the top of the order as they head to Essex for a four-day match beginning on Monday.

Spin bowler Jack Leach also misses the match, after suffering a concussion against Surrey.
