PETER Trego has been named in Somerset's County Championship clash for the first time this season as they look to bounce back from a heavy defeat at Surrey.

Somerset face Essex in Chelmsford in a day/night, pink ball encounter beginning today (Monday, 2pm) having slipped to third in the table following last week's disappointing display in Guildford.

Matt Renshaw is absent having fractured his finger - the Australian has now played his last game for Somerset this season - while Craig Overton (side) and Jack Leach are also absent, the latter due to the concussion protocols which require him to take a seven-day break after he was struck against Surrey.

Ben Green - who has been opening the batting for the Second XI and made his List A debut earlier this summer - is also included in the squad.

Head coach Jason Kerr told the official website: “Obviously we were all really disappointed after the Surrey game and it’s important that we dust ourselves off, go to Chelmsford and return to the standards that we set in the previous five games.

"We’ve played some really good cricket this season and set some really high standards. We need to reflect on what has happened and go again.

“Unfortunately injuries have meant that we have had to make changes to the squad. We’ve lost Jack Leach due to the concussion protocol and Matt Renshaw has a fracture of the finger which means that his time with us is now over.

"Peter Trego is back in the squad and although he’s missed out on red-ball cricket so far this year, he had an outstanding campaign in the Royal London One-Day Cup."

Somerset squad to face Essex: Tom Abell (c), George Bartlett, Dom Bess, Eddie Byrom, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Ben Green, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, James Hildreth, Jamie Overton, Peter Trego and Roelof van der Merwe.
