Trescothick, making his first appearance since breaking his metatarsal in the County Championship match against Lancashire in early May, opened the batting with Eddie Byrom and the pair put on a century stand inside 22 overs.

Byrom fell for 53 with the score on 118 and George Bartlett retired hurt on five, but Trescothick kept going and reached his hundred from 148 balls, hitting 15 fours along the way.

Trescothick eventually fell for 126, but Smeed remained and reached a superb century of his own from 172 deliveries.

Smeed was dismissed shortly prior to the close having hit 16 fours and a six in his 116, with captain Dom Bess ending the day unbeaten on 68.
