The lengthening days and the smell on new mown grass can mean only one thing - the new cricket season is only just around the corner.

The frost and the rain seemed far behind us at the Cooper Associates County Ground last week, and the grass was being cut ready for the first ball of the season to be bowled.

It may only be the end of January but it really isn’t very long until Somerset begin their challenge for the elusive County Championship - the one trophy that they have never won.

Will 2023 be the year that everyone who supports the Cidermen has been waiting for, let’s hope upon hope that this is the case!

It isn’t long until the first pre-season matches get underway with the first one scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, starting at 11am, when Cardiff MCCU are the visitors. Following that, Somerset travel to play Gloucestershire starting on Friday, March 31, before the season gets underway in earnest on Thursday, April 6 with a home match against Warwickshire.

At the last count it’s just under 50 days until the Cardiff UCCE game. Finally, a reminder that the discounted membership offer ended at the end of January.
