Burnham-on-Sea CC 1st XI 250 / 8 (45.0) lost to Uphill Castle CC 1st XI 254 / 5 (41.4)

BURNHAM-on-Sea CC faced off against Uphill Castle at the weekend in the Somerset Cricket Leagues Division One and narrowly lost.

After winning the toss, Burnham elected to bat first and after setting the target at 250, they would have felt it was a good decision.

Both Burnham openers hit half centuries getting the innings off to a great start.

Josh Langer scored 51 runs off 58 balls smashing 8 fours in the process.

And alongside him, Fred Berry scored 56 runs off 108 balls as he bedded himself into the match. He hit 7 fours in his knock.

When Langer lost his wicket, Burnham were 100 for 1, a great spot to be in, and showcasing the strength in the opening partnership.

Next to the crease was Rob Driver who added another 26 runs to the total. Berry fell as Burnham were 145 for 2.

Wesley Kruger scored a further 10 runs and then top scorer of the innings for Burnham, Matt Dibble added 61 runs, another impressive half century.

In fact, the 61 runs came off 25 balls and featured 7 fours and 4 sixes.

The runs dried up at that point however it was not a terrible problem as Burnham had set the target at 250 for 8 off 45 overs.

Himesha Halneththige was the star bowler for Uphill Castle as he took 5 wickets in his 9 over spell for loss of just 35 runs.

In reply, Uphill Castle made a bright start as opener Finn Churchward smashed a 73 ball 52 half century.

Wickets fell rather quickly at the top of the order for Uphill around Churchward's runs and they found themselves at 116 for 4.

However in the middle order, Tom Llewellyn (41) and top scorer Paddy Holyday (60) added some very important runs to put Uphill back in the driving seat.

When Holyday lost his wicket, Ashley Allen stepped in and he and Llewellyn added the remaining runs required to take Uphill to 254 runs and won them the game.

Rob Driver took 2 wickets for Burnham for loss of 45 runs to finish with the best bowling figures.

The result sees Burnham sit in fifth place in Division One of the Somerset Cricket Leagues.

Up next, they take on Ilminster CC- 2nd XI away from home on Saturday, June 11.
