Burnham-on-Sea CC 1st XI 239 / All out (41.2) def. North Newton CC 1st XI 232 / 7 (45.0)

BURNHAM-on-Sea CC earned a narrow seven-run victory at the weekend over North Newton CC at home.

The result gave Burnham 32 league points and sees them move away from the relegation places into seventh in the Somerset Cricket Leagues Division One.

In the match, Burnham were helped by strong batting performances from Lee Coles (92) and Josh Langer (80).

After winning the toss, North Newton chose to field first and the home side would go on to set the target at 239 all out after 41.2 overs.

The three opening batters got off to a rocky start for Burnham as Bradley House (10), Fred Berry (2) and Rob Driver (5) struggled to get going.

However, Langer came in at four and set the tone for his innings early on. He went on to smash six fours and four sixes on his way to 80 runs off 94 deliveries.

Wesley Kruger (7) came and lost his wicket quickly however Coles joined Langer at the other end of the crease and the pair went to work.

Coles scored seven fours and five sixes as he raced to 92 runs off just 64 balls.

The quick turnaround from the two batters in the middle order helped Burnham boost up the runs total.

Despite that though wickets did keep falling and the home side were all out for 239.

Chris Barrington took four wickets for 32 runs to finish with the best figures for North Newton.

In reply, the visitors got off to a strong start with the bat. Dave Worthington finished on 30 not out and carried his bat through the innings.

Meanwhile, Alex White (23), Josh Cook (78) and Stephen Hayes (46) helped get North Newton on track for a win.

But some defensive bowling from Burnham helped slow down the run rate and in the end, the visitors ran out of time, just seven runs shy of the target.

Connor Lefrere finished with three wickets for 29 runs while Rob Driver and Adam Lee took two wickets a piece.

All in all a close game between two sides who were both searching for a win, so it is a good result for Burnham

They return to action this weekend coming when they face Uphill Castle away from home.
