Burnham-on-Sea CC 123 / All out (39.2) lost to Castle Cary CC 209 / 7 (45)

BURNHAM-on-Sea CC lost their penultimate game of the season at the weekend at home against Castle Cary CC.

It was a difficult match for the hosts who lost by 86 runs in the end.

The result now leaves Burnham in eighth place in Division One of the Somerset Cricket Leagues and just 17 league points above the relegation spots.

After winning the toss, Burnham chose to field first and in fairness the bowlers kept the Castle Cary score to 209.

And the top order of the visitors was bowled over rather cheaply as the Burnham bowlers looked in good knick.

Halfway down the order, Kyle Wood top scored for the visitors with 41 runs.

Aside from him the top order left much to be desired and late strong scores from Rich Atkinson (36 not out) and Mike King (40 not out) helped the visitors.

Those two scores took the total to 209 for 7 after their 45 overs were up.

Josh Langer finished with the best figures as he took two wickets for 24 runs in his eight over spell.

There was also a two-wicket haul for Ollie Farnham, while the other wickets were taken by Connor Lefrere, Pete Harris and Rob Driver.

In reply, Burnham struggled to make in roads early as the top order was bowled over very quickly.

Josh Langer and Wesley Kruger in the middle order both added 32 runs to direct Burnham the right way.

However it was not enough as once their wickets fell the tail order fell cheaply as well and Burnham were all out in the 40th over, 86 runs short of the target.

There was two, three-wicket hauls for the Castle Cary bowlers in Andrew Bartlett and Rich Atkinson.

The visiting bowling side made the most of the extra bounce and turn and deservedly earned their team the win.

Up next for Burnham is the final league game of the season away from home against West Monkton.

While a defeat will not mean relegation, the Burnham players will be looking to keep the outcome in their hands and win the match.
