Brean golf round-up (From Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News)

BREAN Golf Club’s seniors had an excellent result in their latest inter-club match against Vivary Park.

They played some good golf at the tight Taunton course and shocked their hosts by winning 4-2.

At Brean two days later, it was John Fear who headed the scoreboard in the monthly stableford.

He posted a score of 44, giving him a one-point success and earning him a handicap reduction.

George Thomas just pipped Jim McLauchlan to second place on countback after both had 43.

The midweek stablefords are up and running again on Wednesdays and it is hoped the number of entrants will increase in the coming weeks.

Dave Jones won the event a fortnight ago with a score of 33 points – three ahead of Nathan Pickering.

The weather was poor for the latest Race to Wales competition and the entry was affected so much that the event was cancelled.

With the majority of the bad weather having passed through, the Sunday was a slightly better day when the monthly stableford was up for grabs.

Simon Copp had the best score with a massive 47 points.

He threatened a similar score two weeks before but this time he didn’t have many poor holes.

He had a four-point victory over seniors’ captain-elect Dai Wood, who claimed second place.

Tony Groves led the way in Division Three with 46, giving him a convincing win over Jordan Harris (39).

The lowest winning total came in the top division.

Steve Peates continued his great form with 44 as he relegated Tony Higgins (42) into second spot.

Some of these men may need to check their handicaps before they next go out as the General Play rule will be in operation to reduce some handicaps!

The ladies held their monthly stableford on the Sunday, with Gail Mason (34) collecting top spot.

The Wednesday before they played the alternate day stableford and Janet Lyons won with 35 points.

Results: Midweek stableford – 1 Dave Jones (33); 2 Nathan Pickering (30).

Ladies’ alternate day stableford – 1 Janet Lyons (35); 2 Liz Blackwell (32).

Seniors’ stableford – 1 John Fear (44); 2 George Thomas (43); 3 Jim McLauchlan (43).

Monthly stableford: Division One – 1 Steve Peates (44); 2 Tony Higgins (42); 3 Paul Jones (40).

Division Two – 1 Simon Copp (47); 2 Dai Wood (43); 3 Dave Bradley (40).

Division Three – 1 Tony Groves (46); 2 Jordan Harris (39); 3 George Wood (38).

Ladies’ monthly stableford – 1 Gail Mason (34).
