TWO Highbridge schoolboys raced to success in the Somerset schools cross-country championships and will now represent the county in the regional event.
King Alfred students Matthew Dickinson, a year nine pupil, and Luke Prior from year seven took part in the race at Taunton racecourse.
Competing in the under-15s category determined Matthew ran the 4,000m course and dragged himself from tenth on the first lap to the leading pack on the final lap.
With just 400m to go he managed to clinch third spot despite only taking up running eight weeks ago.
Fellow Highbridge boy Luke was competing in the under-13s race as one of the pre-race favourites.
From the gun he took an early lead and began to push a fast pace. Over the two and a half lap 2,900m course he never looked back and on the final lap he pulled away to win it by 20 yards.
It means the pair have now qualified to compete for Somerset and in the South-West championships in Cornwall on February 27.
