Somerset Senior Cup quarter final

BURNHAM United have been dumped out of the Somerset Senior Cup by a talented Cheddar side.

United failed to get to grips with Cheddar's slick pass and move football from the kick off and were pinned back for long periods.

The visitors were three goals down by half time and were unable to create any chances in front of goal.

To make matters worse for Burnham, versatile forward Stuart Walford, who looked like United's most lively player, was forced off through injury in the opening 30 minutes.

Manager Ashley Plant's team talk consisted of telling his players to show some fight or continue how they were and get humiliated. He replaced Puddy and Neilson for Ed Lamb and Hicks.

Burnham showed massive improvement after the break but were still second best in most departments as the premiership side showed the difference between the two divisions.

Burnham huffed and puffed and certainly put Cheddar under pressure but rarely looked like scoring apart from a sublime volley from Hirons, that dipped just too late and hit the top of the net.

A mistake at the back allowed Cheddar's top scorer to toe poke in the fourth and end United's dreams of a cup semi final.

Manager Plant said: “We were woeful in the first half and some of the players just didn't put enough in.

They showed a bit of character in the second half but ultimately they were a far superior team than us. It's the first time this season I can say we would have lost even if we were at our best.”
