AFTER a two week break the Somerset Vikings returned to action with a 40-10 home win against Bristol Sonics A to reach the play-offs.

They opened brightly but things looked ominous when Josh Bray, the Vikings full back, had to be helped off the pitch with a serious knee injury after just five minutes, and was replaced by Nick Francis.

It took until the 17th minute before John Ferguson opened the scoring with a try out wide which Dan Hinton was unable to convert. He was able to make amends a few minutes later when a score from Craig Williams presented him with a more straightforward conversion.

Bristol came back strongly to score an unconverted try but with the first half drawing to a close there was still time for Vikings debutant Fotu Lahu, who impressed throughout, to crash over and ensure that the Vikings went into half time with a 14-4 lead.

The second half opened with a brace of tries for the home side. Sonny Haines, another of the Vikings powerful forwards, and Webb stretched the lead with excellent tries. Hinton turned the screw with two tries of his own and Ferguson bravely shrugged off tackles to score in the corner. Hinton finished with four conversions from the eight home tries.

Bristol had a consolation four pointer towards the end through Will Tobin, an effort that was converted from long range by Singleton.
