Brean Golf Club latest news
PHIL Hodgson and Mark and Suzanne Hatfield all enjoyed the winners’ spoils over the weekend at Brean Golf Club.
Hodgson was the clear winner of the Super Series round on Saturday with a 43 point haul before the husband-and-wife team of Mark and Suzanne clinched the Open Mixed Greensomes a day later.
The Hatfield’s racked up an impressive total of 46 stableford points over the 18 holes in the Open Mixed Greensomes event as they collected the Anniversary Bowl along with the top prize on offer. They ended the day two clear of the rest of the pairs who were led by visitors Jan Warner-Booth and M Donohue from Windwhistle on 44.
A countback was needed on 41 to determine the third place finishers as Ken and Shelia Rouse just edged out Chris Stephens and Jan Simms on the back three holes.
The previous day, Phil Hodgson handed in his first ever gross competition round of less than 80 thanks to some straight hitting and solid putting which equated to 43 stableford points when his handicap was applied.
This was good enough for a two-point win over last year’s club captain Dave Bradley with Mike Porter taking third on 40. The win gave Hodgson maximum points in the Super Series and also reduced his handicap to 15.
The previous weekend, over 20 of Brean’s past captains gathered for their annual competition.
As always, everyone enjoyed the day and some positive comments were made regarding the new course and its good condition.
Winners of the Stableford event were Annie Williams for the ladies and Steve Bateman for the men.
Williams defied an injured knee to post an excellent 40 points to end up one ahead of Gill Berryman whilst Bateman showed signs of a return to his best form as his back nine total edged out Dave Bradley and Chris Fairchild on the back nine after they all scored 37 points.
The Seniors suffered another home defeat as their season draws to a close. They went down by 4.5-1.5 at home to a Farrington side which completed the double over their Brean counterparts in 2012.
