Batting lets down Mark in opening-match defeat

Somerset League Div Three: Ashbrittle (34) 182-5 bt Mark (8) 77 by 105 runs

MARK began life back down in Division Three with a comprehensive defeat by league newcomers Ashbrittle. The home side have moved from the West Somerset League after several years of success and on this evidence, will be the side to beat.

Ashbrittle decided to bat first on a damp strip and soon lost opener R Hill for two, bowled by Neil Coleman. Bradbury helped take the score to 42 before Luke Gowan uprooted his off stump, then Coleman took a tremendous, diving catch to dismiss Woodcock off the bowling of Dave Worthington.

Williams was also sent packing by Worthington without scoring and when some sharp fielding by Russ Edwards resulted in A Woodcock being run out for 16, the contest was evenly balanced with the hosts 79-5 in the 29th over.

However, with opener A Hill still at the crease, Ashbrittle slowly gained the upper hand. He and B Franks took the score to 182-5 by the end of the allotted 45 overs with Hill having hit a fine, unbeaten 91 and Franks on 24 not out.

Worthington was the pick of the Mark bowlers with 2-26, but special mention should go to 14-year-old Adam Peters, who had 0-16 from four overs.

Mark's response got of to a disastrous start, with Nesaling bowling opener Mike Norris for a duck in the second over. Coleman, Worthington and Nick Ollerenshaw all fell to the accurate bowling of Franks, while debutant Mike Hocking also returned to the Pavilion without troubling the scorers.

Stuart Blake lost his middle stump, and when Gowan was caught in the outfield for two, Mark were reeling at 24-7 in the 20th over. The experienced Brian Edwards and Lewis Degelas restored some pride with a partnership of 46, but when Degelas was stumped for 34, Edwards soon followed, caught for 20.

Peters was last to go as Mark were dismissed for a disappointing 77.
