Bank Holiday wash-out for Burnham first team after good start

Somerset League Div Two: Burnham (16) 88-2 v Evercreech (14), abandoned, rain

BURNHAM had to play their first league match of the season on Bank Holiday Monday because of the weekend Gullivers Youth Rugby Festival at the BASC ground.

They paid for it in terms of the weather, because Saturday was dry all day, whereas rain, which began at around 3.30pm washed out the match with Evercreech after Burnham had made a promising start.

They were sent in by the visitors and Burnham's 40-plus openers Glen Gaylard and Jim Bloodworth batted well, putting on 48 in 11 overs before Gaylard was bowled by Chris Ough for 14.

Another over-40 Andy Ashfold joined Bloodworth, who was eventually trapped lbw by Matt Ough for 36. Ashfold was 19 not out and Andy Smith unbeaten on six when rain forced the players off the field in the 25th over with the total 88-2.

An early tea was taken in the hope of a resumption, but as the rain became heavy and the wicket very wet, play was eventually abandoned.
