Six wickets for Jim Birkett in seconds' victory

Somerset League 2nd XI Div Three NE: Banwell & Churchill (7) 77 lost to Burnham (35) 78-4 by 6 wkts

BURNHAM Seconds made the short journey to Churchill for their first game of the league season under new skipper Phil White, who, at 19, must be the youngest captain in the history of the club.

He got off to a good start by winning the toss and, having looked at the sticky pitch and overcast conditions, had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat.

The opening bowlers were Neil Barker from the bottom end and Jim Birkett. Barker made the initial breakthrough, bowling Wacker, the opposing skipper, with the total on 12.

Birkett bowled the other opener and had the dangerous Davies caught by debutant Lee Vaughan in the covers. Burnham's other debutant Simon Baunton replaced Jim Birkett and Barker gave way to Andy Birkett after Barker had removed one more batsman.

The older Birkett plugged away, bowling ten overs for 14 runs, but no wickets. However, Baunton struck twice, crucially bowling the impressive Irons for a dozen carefully-made runs.

With the score at 77-7 off 34 overs, Jim Birkett returned and mopped up the weak tail swiftly for no more runs in just five balls. He finished with 6-11, leaving Burnham needing 78 to win.

The batting was opened by Sam Walker and the evergreen Craig Lefrere. Walker struck a fine boundary before being bowled by Irons, then skipper White joined Lefrere. They made slow, but steady progress before White (2) succumbed to spinner Williams with the total on 28.

No 4 batsman Vaughan played some nice shots, including two boundaries, before being stumped off the impressive Williams for12 and Lefrere (13) soon followed, making the score 50-4.

With victory still not a formality, wicketkeeper Mark Penfold joined Baunton and got after the bowling in his usual style, clipping the ball away for 3 fours on his way to a decisive 20 not out.

He was well supported by Baunton, who refused to give his wicket away cheaply as Burnham won by six wickets.

Thanks must go to the Banwell & Churchill tea ladies for an excellent tea at the interval.

Details: Banwell & Churchill II 77 (Irons 13 J Birkett 6-11, Barker 2-7, Baunton 2-19), Burnham II 78-4 (Penfold 20 no, Lefrere 13, Vaughan12 Williams 2-23).
