United fall to late goal by champions

Somerset County League Premier Div: Nailsea Utd 2, Burnham Utd 1

BURNHAM were the better side against the new champions at Nailsea on Monday evening, but lost to a late goal in their penultimate match. It started threequarters of an hour late because of traffic hold-ups following a motorway accident.

Burnham were without Kyle McErlain (suspended), Steve Murray, Scott Lismore and Steve Eley (all on holiday). Reserve defender Matthews made his debut and Craig Slack, usually a goalkeeper, was one of the substitutes.

Nailsea did not play like champions, but went ahead early on when a long ball found a forward looking offside, who drew keeper Kevin Hurd out and lobbed him. Burnham had a chance from a corner, but Ross McErlain's header went just over.

Hurd did some good handling under pressure, then made a save with his feet at the expense of a corner. From the corner, he made a good punch-out. Burnham were playing well, but half time came with them still a goal down.

The second half began with Hurd making a great, one-handed save. Burnham were playing well, keeping the ball down and passing accurately.

They were soon level, as Steve Spencer received the ball down the right, beat two heavy tackles and crossed under a lot of pressure from the byline for Dave Keirle to score from close range.

Ross McErlain made a good clearance in the box to deny Nailsea, then another fine save by Hurd resulted in a corner. At the other end, Spencer was going from one wing to the other, creating all sorts of problems for Nailsea.

When Keirle sent a shot wide, then a strong effort from Spencer was pushed over by the keeper. The winner came a few minutes from time when a powerful Nailsea shot hit the bar, came down and spun into the net, giving Hurd no chance.

This was a good, all-round performance by Burnham, but outstanding were Steve Spencer and Kevin Hurd, both named men of the match.

Team: Hurd, Osgood, Hirons, Ross McErlain, Matthews, L McErlain, Spence, Sc Lismore, Spencer (sub Slack), Ryan McErlain, Keirle. Sub unused: Cox.

The first team's final match of the season is at home to Shirehampton on Saturday (3pm). The reserves had their last match at Westland United last night (Tuesday), while the A and B teams have finished.

The club presentation night is on Friday, May 16 (7.30pm) at the Railway. the AGM is on Thursday, May 29 (7.30pm).
