Scrappy goal is enough for Town to finish with a win

Taunton Saturday League Div One: Highbridge Town 1, Staplegrove 0

TOWN finished their season with a victory on Wednesay evening over relegated Staplegrove that was more comfortable than the score suggests.

The visitors, champions of the season before last, fielded quite a strong side, whereas Town were depleted by work commitments. Sixteen-year-old Jake Barrett was in goal but did not have a lot to do on a windy night.

With lorry-drivers Craig Holley and Kev Watts not able to make the start, they were named as substitutes. Holley went on early for Phil Fisher, who had played in the reserves in the night before, while Watts eventually replaced Carl Wait, another two-games-in-24 hours man.

In a game of few chances, the only goal came in the first half, when one of Craig Holley's long throws found it way into the net via either the visitors' keeper or Wayne Hand. Hand claimed the goal.

The real dangerman in the game was Town striker Chris Le Marchand, who has found his best form just as the season ends. He was full of running and with the equally mobile Richard Cattell playing wide left, the Staplegrove defence were kept busy.

For ten minutes into the second half, Highbridge came under pressure, but then they settled again to their passing football and created several half-chances, with Holley's long throws always a danger.

So Town finished a season which had started promisingly in eighth place and without a manager, Brian Lock having quit two weeks ago.

They will be hoping someone comes forward to take over at their AGM, which is at Highbridge Social Club this Sunday (1pm).

The team against Staplegrove was: Barrett; Green, R Holley, Osgood, Wait (sub Watts);R Cook, Kear, Fisher (rep C Holley), Cattell; Hand, Le Marchand.

On Tuesday night last week, Town Reserves lost their final match of the season 2-1 away to their Middlezoy counterparts, who finished third in the table. Simon Fouracres scored for the reserves, who have had a promising season, despite their sixth-place finish.

SILVER Street VW Taunton & District Saturday League results included: TUESDAY (Apr 29). Div Four - Middlezoy Res 2, Highbridge Res 1. WEDNESDAY (Apr 30). Div One - Highbridge 1, Staplegrove 0). THURSDAY. Somerset Intermediate Cup final - Civil Service (Taunton) 0, Bath Arsenal 2. Seward Cup final - Watchet 2, Woolavington Predators 1.
