The Lads shoot down Bombers - twice

THE Lads completed a remarkable double as they beat champions Bombers by 14 at the Berrow Inn last week in Division One of the Highbridge & District Skittles League.

This season, The Lads have been the only team to defeat Bombers on their own alley at the Bristol Bridge and last week's loss was only Bombers' second of the season.

Steamers' 28-pin victory over Brent Knoll Inn confirmed them as runners-up and relegated the losers. Lighthouse Rogues are also down, despite having beaten already-doomed Railway Burtle by 62 at the Lighthouse Inn. Paul Hale had a three-ball maximum 27 in his 96.

In Division Two, joint leaders Sleepers and Tryers were playing a title decider this week when they met at The Ritz. Tryers were 70 too good for Outsiders last week, with Mark Hembury (83) and Tony Mansfield (80) top-scoring. A first hand of 105 pulled 45 pins for Tryers.

Sleepers defeated Accrington Stanley at Pawlett Pavilion, where no irregular betting activities took place! Bellends, Four Finger Club, Nobby's One and White Rebels are all fighting it out for the last promotion place. Four Finger will need results to go their way as they are a point behind the other three.

Richard Gould scored 98 for Bobbetts Burntouts, with five big spares, in a 36-pin victory over Coopers Arms. At the bottom, the losers of the match between Coopers Arms and Accrington Stanley will be relegated, along with Outsiders and Trainers.

Amazingly, the top two were also meeting in the final week in Division Three. Crown Criminals were taking on Alleycats at the Crown with the winners being champions.

Criminals could have won the title last week, but were well beaten by Yhe Little Acorns at the Oaktree, while Alleycats came from behind to defeat Top House by 11, thanks to a last hand of 82 at the Somerset and Dorset.

Wanderers need only to win their last game to gain promotion, but if they lose, the winners of the Coopermen-Bombardiers match will go up instead.

After 29 matches, it is amazing that the race for the titles of the two lowe divisions are so close. The odds of both titles being decided by the teams involved playing each other, must be 1000-1.
