One-shot win for Burnham A in first league match

AWAY to Victoria B in their first Somerset County League Div One North match of the season on Saturday, Burnham A men trailed for most of the match. The deficit increased to nine at halfway before Burnham made slow but steady progress throughout the second half.

Trailing by four shots going into the final end, Burnham pulled shots on all three rinks. Mike Davies's won by 20, enough to give Burnham overall victory by a single shot.

Result: Victoria 57 (4pts), Burnham 58 (8). Terry Davison, Bill Hills (capt), Hugh Treloar, Mike Davies 30-10; Mike Baker, Eddie Tipping, Ellis Davies, Don Bridges 14-26; Dave Barnett, Alan Lane, Alan McKinlay 14-21.

In a mixed triples friendly at home to Porlock, Burnham led by 17 at the tea-break. They pulled another four shots as the second half started, but Porlock kept the match on a more even footing until the final end, when Burnham pulled seven to win five of the six rinks and by 29 shots.

Result: Burnham 109, Porlock 77. Anne McKinlay, Ken Pollard, Mike Baker (capt) 9-15; Ernie Budd, Hugh Moore, Sylvia Lupton 17-9; Terry Davison, Anne Baker, Brian Saunders 24-13; Brian Treloar, Alan Lawrence, Rita Harris 24-13; Stan Fox, Annie Baynes, Eddie Tipping 15-14; Tony Griffin, Joan Hurling, Alan McKinlay 17-13.

At home against Victoria D in the County League Div Three North, Burnham B men trailed by two after the first end but led by eight after the second and by 20 after ten. They won two of the three rinks and by 15 overall.

Result: Burnham 63 (10pts), Victoria 48 (2pts). Barry Brown, Andrew Collett, Dave Richards, Malcolm Rawles (capt) 29-8; Ernie Budd, John Chesney, Alan Lawrence, John Cooper 20-18; Jim Dolan, Bob Evans, Brian Treloar, Mervyn Lilley 14-22.

Burnham mixed team, away to Clevedon Promenade in a friendly, led by 17 after end seven, but, by halfway, the advantage had slipped to nine.

They continued to lose shots early in the second half, reducing the margin to two. They ended up by losing three of the five rinks and by 12 overall.

Result: Clevedon 105, Burnham 93.
