So close as Brean make Somerset Bowl exit

BREAN men's team travelled to neutral Worlebury for their first-round match in the Somerset Bowl against Enmore Park.

In a close encounter, Brean lost 3-2. None of the matches was decided before the 16th green, while two went to the 18th and beyond.

Murray Parsons and Dave Porter gave Brean a good start with victory at the 21st hole in the top game. The next two matches went the way of Enmore on the last green before Jordan Jones and Barry Organ levelled the tie at two apiece.

Unfortunately for the Brean, the final match was won by Enmore.

Brean results: Murray Parsons/Dave Porter won at 21st, Pete Barton/ Dave Barthram lost 1 down, Roger Vaughan/Keith Porter lost 1 down, Jordan Jones/Barry Organ won 2&1, Matt Haskins/Chris Stephens lost 3&2.

Super Series events were played on both days at Brean on the weekend of April 26/27. Saturday's overall winner was Clive Goode, whose score of 40 points beat runner-up Mike Porter.

Craig Higgins brought his handicap down to 14 after his 41 points finished top of the pile on Sunday.

Also played on Sunday was the Parent and Child Competition. Only seven pairs took part and the combination of Steve and Alec Bateman took the spoils with an excellent 42 points. Another father-and-son partnership of Doug and Simon Liles also returned a 42 points but lost on countback over the last six.

The latest Midweek Stableford was won by past club captain Chris Norris on 34 pts, with Kevin Boyer second.

Brean Seniors maintained their winning ways with a comfortable 5-1 victory at home to Kingweston. Doug Liles and Barry Tucker had already completed a sizeable win by the time they reached the 16th. Then one of their opponents Robin Palmer (after some club advice from Barry) proceeded to hole his tee-shot for an ace.

Barry Tucker has yet to experience a hole-in-one himself but this was the second he had witnessed in four days, after Tony Romeo's ace on the previous Saturday. Beware a large bar bill if you are playing alongside him!

Des Emery's 36 points won the Seniors' Stableford on Thursday.

Entries are still being received for Brean's Pro-Celebrity-Am tournament on Tuesday next week, when the Tom Childs Memorial Trophy will be played for. Stars from horse-racing and cricket will be playing, along with a few local golf professionals.
