Burnham 2nd XV 27, Wiveliscombe 2nds 22

BURNHAM II also recorded a victory as they beat Wiveliscombe 27-22 at BASC in their opening league fixture of the season.

Tries from Alex Watkins, Matt Glanville, Rob Lewis and Lee Berry sealed the win, in a closely-fought contest.

It took a break-out via Chris Leigh to point Burnham in the right direction; his break-away and link-up with Will Grant eventually led to Alex Watkins crossing for the opening score.

Glanville was then rewarded for some good support play, when he got on the end of an offload to score to the left of the posts.

At this stage Burnham went to sleep, allowing the visitors to get back into the game with a try and two penalties. This acted as a wake-up call to Burnham.

A turn-over from Ben Bowkett allowed Rio to see space and cut his way through the visiting backline to touchdown.

A fine break from Will Grant resulted in Rob Lewis diving over for the fourth try.

Wiveliscombe were still a threat and demonstrated this with a try and three penalties.

But Lee Berry’s try sealed the win for Burnham as he finished off a strong forward drive.

The 2nd XV face a derby encounter on Saturday when they travel to play Bridgwater & Albion 3rd XV (3pm).
