Western Counties West Burnham 1st XV 20, Truro 10

BURNHAM put the disappointment of last week’s defeat behind them with a ten-point victory over Truro.

With the home side’s forwards performing in all areas – scrummaging, line-out and loose play – their strengths were too much for the Cornwall outfit.

Only a few minutes into the match, Truro infringed and were punished by Tim Piper’s penalty.

However, Burnham had to wait a further 30 minutes to increase their lead, forcing the visitors to mishandle and the ball to run free.

Good link-up play between the backs and forwards resulted in Ollie Streeter popping a scoring pass to front row partner Sam Coles, who touched down for a try. Piper converted to make it 10-0 at half-time.

For the first period of the second half Burnham demonstrated their set play and mauling ability, completing three phases after a penalty line-out for Alan House to capitalise close to the posts for another converted try.

Not to be outdone, Truro then produced their best period of the match, scoring two tries in quick succession to reduce the deficit to 17-10.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they ran out of steam in the dying moments, enabling Hayden Tuttiet to take away their losing bonus point.

The win means Burnham sit third in the league, having won eight out of their opening nine matches.

The second highest scorers are currently on 37 points, three points below leaders Ivybridge, who have the advantage thanks to bonus points gained.

Burnham have no league match this week as they play on Sunday (November 17) against Bath University in the County Cup. Kick-off is at 2pm.
