BURNHAM RFC vice-chairman Chris Jones believes the club is in the ascendent after a positive start to the season both on and off the pitch.

Despite losing a number of key players to higher league clubs, Burnham’s 1st XV have started to string some good results together, while the 2nd XV have enjoyed their best ever start to the season.

Jones said: “After a difficult start to the season with multiple injuries the first team are finding their feet in Western Counties North.

“The pre-season preparation and fitness levels of the team are now overriding losing some key players to higher league teams and injury woes.

“The second team have had their best ever start to the season, experiencing some good player support for home games and wins to boot.

“If this was matched for away games league promotion could be a distinct possibility – it’s in their hands.

“Head coach Graham Buller, with coaching support from the senior players, is working hard to build the team.”

Burnham have been given a free passage into the second round of the Somerset Cup after opponents Chard decided to concentrate on their league campaign.

Off the pitch, meanwhile, it’s a busy time at Burnham RFC.

Jones said: “Work’s underway on the new supporters’ stand to complement our already first class facilities with the contract signed with local building contractor Andy Marsh.

“Project manager and fundraiser Neil McKen has made it happen, so on behalf of the club, thankyou Neil.”

Burnham 1st XV travel to Cheltenham this weekend, while the 2nd XV travel to Wyvern on November 22.
