Somerset Senior Cup

Worle 3, Burnham United 2

BURNHAM United squandered a two-goal lead to go down 3-2 at Division Two West outfit Worle.

Steve Leaf scored twice for United to give them a 2-0 lead, but Worle fought back to progress to round three.

Burnham got off to a flying start through a Steve Leaf sublime chip and furthered their lead when Leaf dribbled around five players before rounding the keeper to slot home.

Burnham retained possession well and with Mylum in outstanding form created numerous chances that were all spurned.

Worle hit back just before the break and equalised through a defensive error with 20 minutes remaining.

Both teams attacked and the game could have gone either way but when a Burnham shot was blocked, Worle countered and another slip allowed them to tap home.

Mike Stevens and Charlie Harding were outstanding in midfield but United couldn’t find the equaliser.

Somerset County Division Two West Burnham United Reserves 0, Kewstoke Lions 7 BURNHAM United Reserves slumped to a humbling 7-0 home defeat at the hands of high-flying Kewstoke Lions on Saturday.

The defeat is Burnham’s eighth of the season and leaves them second from bottom in the division with just three points from nine games.

Paul Marquiss scored a hat-trick for the visitors as they climbed to second place, while Aaron Bray, Leon Brueford, Nicky Daniels and Ben Popperwell were also on target for Lions.

Burnham started very well and nearly took an early lead with a strong shot from Harry Wedgewood-Potts, but Kewstoke’s keeper managed to palm it wide.

Up to the 20-minute mark, Burnham were competing all over the park, but Kewstoke opened their account with a well-timed run and pass which split the Burnham defence.

Kewstoke are a strong team, and Burnham started giving the ball away far too cheaply with their opponents taking full advantage, scoring four more goals before halftime.

In the second half Burnham were much better and battled away tirelessly against a team full of confidence, but all to no avail.

The Reserves take a break from league action this weekend when they host Clevedon United Reserves in the Division Two Cup.

Clevedon have fared far better than Burnham this season, taking 12 points from ten games, but Burnham will see this as an opportunity to kickstart their season.
