Highbridge Town 2, Taunton United 3

HIGHBRIDGE Town came out on the wrong side of ‘a dogfight’, according to their manager Matt Pitt, after his side slumped to a 3-2 defeat to Taunton United on Saturday.

Kane Powell and Chris Taylor were on target for Town to ensure the sides were level heading into the final 15 minutes – but a misplaced pass allowed the visitors in for the winner to condemn Pitt’s side to a sixth league defeat of the season.

“Unfortunately we did not perform to our level today and after such a great start I expected us to go on and win the game,” Pitt said.

“The pitch was very heavy and did not allow us to play our usual quick attacking game and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of a dog fight that they just wanted a bit more than us.

“I fully expect us to bounce back against Nailsea away on Saturday and then get back to making our place a fortress when we welcome Imperial in the quarter finals of the cup.”

On a very heavy and wet pitch Town could not have started better with the opening goal coming 47 seconds into the game, when Cameron Hampson hit a 40 yard cross field ball to Kane Powell who duly dispatched the ball past the onrushing keeper.

The lead lasted 20 minutes and from a corner, poor marking allowed the United striker a free header on the six-yard box to head home the equalizer.

The game was level at half-time with the ground really proving tough to play any football on - and within 10 minutes of the second half, United took the lead again.

Town soon equalised, with Scott flicking on for Taylor to hit a spectacular strike from 25 yards past the United keeper to make it two apiece.

Town were then on the front foot and with 15 left to play were pushing to get the third goal, when after a nice piece of football around the middle of the park, the ball was given away and with Town out of position, it allowed a quick triangle to put the United player through on goal and he dispatched his shot past Harrison.

Town went for the equalizer throwing Mike Green on for Cameron Hampson looking for the equalizer but unfortunately it did not come and United held out for the three deserved points.
