Somerset Division Two West

Highbridge Town 1 Churchill Club 70 0

HIGHBRIDGE Town went into the game versus Churchill on a winning streak of eight games, and they made it nine against a dogged opponent at the REC.

The first half was an even affair with the sides going into half-time at 0-0, but the signs were there that Churchill were tiring and Town knew they could capitalise in the second half.

The second half started with Town having plenty of chances, but neither Chris Taylor and Matt Scott could find the net when clean through on goal.

It was midway through the second half when Scott raced through to be taken down by the Churchill keeper for a penalty. It was Scott who picked himself up to take the spot-kick, but his effort was saved by the away keeper and it was looking like it was not to be Town’s day.

With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Town finally broke the deadlock with Scott having a simple tap in after good work down the right flank.

It was a lead they kept to the final whistle, with Churchill forcing the first save from Town’s captain Steve Bailey in goal deep into injury time, but the home side held out for all 3 points.

Manager Matt Pitt said: "I thought we were below par again today which is a small concern, but when you are winning games and not playing well you can’t grumble too much.

"Churchill caused us problems with their height and strength across the park, but soon as they tired our quality showed through and chances created we should have won the game by a much bigger scoreline.

"We go into this weekend’s semi-final against the same team and if we perform to 70% of what we are capable of, then we will come out comfortable winners and book our spot in the final of the county divisional cup.

"That’s eight on the bounce now and all we can do is take it a game at a time and come mid-May, hopefully, we will be sat here with the league and cup trophies to end the season with."
