Somerset County League Division 1W
Burnham United 4, Uphill Castle 1

BURNHAM went into their penultimate league facing an Uphill Castle team who were unbeaten in seven games and produced a fantastic team performance to run out 4-1 winners.

United were on top from the start, and nearly opened the scoring early on when Jordie Eldridge turned the Uphill defence and shot just wide in the third minute.

Burnham continued to press forward and came close again through an Eldridge effort saved by the keeper, with new signing Jesse McQuaid putting the rebound over the bar.

The impressive McQuaid was soon rewarded on 35 minutes with his first goal for the club as he headed in an Olly Morris cross to give Burnham a deserved lead.

The hosts doubled the lead on 42 minutes when Joe Selway curled a left-footed strike in to the top corner following a Uphill Castle mix up at the back.

Burnham started the second half sloppily and were punished on 55 minutes when Uphill pulled a goal back, but this sparked Burnham back into action and they restored their two-goal cushion when a Finley Wilkinson free-kick picked out Selway, who finished with a right footed volley.

The same two players linked up again on 76 minutes, as another Wilkinson free kick was met by Selway, who completed a perfect hat-trick with a bullet header into the bottom corner, giving Burnham the 4-1 win.

The three points lifted Burnham above Cleeve West Town into eighth, which is where they will finish no matter what happens in their final match of the season this weekend.
