Somerset County League
Division 1 West
Congresbury 1, Burnham United 6

BURNHAM United convincingly beat basement side Congresbury on Saturday, to take them within a point of the league leaders Somerton Town.

The visitors made a good start to the game, with Joe Selway’s mazy run beating two players and his cross finding Matt Scott, who shot just over.

However, a mistake in the middle of the park was punished by the hosts, Jacob Bell putting them ahead on 15 minutes.

Burnham got back into their stride, though and on 30 minutes the ball fell to Selway in the box to volley in and level the game.

A fantastic double save from the Congresbury keeper from Selway and Scott was in vain, as Harrison Kidner headed Burnham in front.

And, on the stroke of half-time, Selway made it 3-1 with an exquisite 20-yard free-kick.

Scott got the goal he deserved on 55 minutes from an Elliot Lamb corner, heading in for 4-1, and Selway completed his hat-trick when put through by Ben Cherry eight minutes from time.

The icing on the cake came in the 87th minute, when a corner from the right was met by Ed Lamb to make it 6-1.

United now sit fifth in the standings on 24 points, with all of the top four currently on 25.

Burnham United A 4, Banwell A 1

A SECOND goal-scoring masterclass from Steve Eley in two weeks proved the difference as Burnham United A beat Banwell A on Saturday.

The visitors started better, but Eley scored on 25 minutes after excellent work from Harry Wedgewood-Potts down the right.

The same combination saw Wedgewood-Potts cross for Eley to score his second with a bullet header and, just before half time, Eley completed his hat-trick with an excellent chip over the keeper.

The hosts extended their lead in the second half, as Dax Vincent scored with a powerful strike.

Burnham then took their foot off the gas, and were happy to see out the game in difficult windy conditions.

Banwell scored near the end, and keeper Ashley Harrison made an important save before the final whistle to keep the score at 4-1.

This result moves Burnham to the top of the table.

Wedmore Reserves 2, Burnham United B 4

BURNHAM B won their sixth game of the season to stay within the promotion hunt.

On a difficult surface, Burnham B started poorly, before Harrison Givens scored with a neat finish.

But the Bs were caught cold and conceded quickly afterwards, from a long ball over the top.

Jayden Watts then scored his first goal for Burnham with a sweetly-struck volley which the keeper couldn’t get a hand to, and he made it 3-1 with a composed finish.

Poor defending let Wedmore back in again to bring them back to within a goal shortly before half-time.

Manager Jeff Smith scored from the penalty spot 10 minutes before the end as Burnham B saw out the game.
