Burnham United 2, Minehead 1

HAVING lost 4-2 at Minehead just four days earlier, Burnham United had the chance to avenge the defeat on Saturday, and did so with a solid team performance.

The visitors started the better of the two teams in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Burnham who had the first clear chance when Matt Scott’s right-footed shot hit the keeper when one-on-one.

Scott was not to be denied, as just seven minutes later he slotted home to give Burnham the lead.

This gave the home team confidence and Ryan Stiles came close to doubling the lead, shooting wide after Jack Cherry put him through.

Just before half time Cherry was again involved in the build up along with Stiles to create a chance for Finlay Paul, who shot just wide.

Burnham kept up the pressure from the start of the second half looking for the second goal with a determination not to concede, and on the hour Scott was unlucky not to make it 2-0 when lobbing wide from a tight angle.

Minutes later Scott did get his second, with a right-footed strike giving Burnham the two-goal lead.

Minehead pushed on to try and get back into the game but the back line of Cain Smith, Daniel Giblett, Harry Penfold and Ed Lamb kept them to long range shots.

The visitors did pull one back in the final minute from a deflected long-range shot, but Burnham were worthy winners on the day.

Meanwhile, Burnham A were crowned Weston and District Division 4 champions after Banwell couldn't raise a team, so the points were awarded to Burnham, putting them clear at the top with one game still to play.
