BURNHAM remain in promotion contention following an impressive five-wicket win at South Petherton on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 222, they got the win in the 44th over thanks to a superb all-round display from Rob Driver. Driver took 5-64 before hitting an unbeaten 90 to see Burnham home.

Earlier Burnham put the home side in to bat on a beautiful batting wicket and a fast but unpredictable outfield. Rob Driver struck early having Lukins (1) caught at the wicket.

But a second-wicket stand of 67 saw South Petherton fight back. Acreman (37) fell to Brian Brogden, and Wookey (49) soon followed bowled by Driver.

With some poor fielding and catches missed, the runs continued to flow as Powell (18), Fry (45) and Harris (22) all contributed.

The 200 came up in the 40th over, but Mike Green and Driver slowed the runs as the lower order took the score to 221-9.

Driver finished with 5-64 and was well supported by Green (2-32) and Brogden (2-57).

With the wicket slowly deteriorating under the baking sun, Burnham batsman had to be watchful for the odd ball that did something out of the ordinary.

Brad House and Jim Bloodworth made an opening stand of 81 in 19 overs, before Bloodworth was caught in the covers for 40. This brought Driver to the wicket and he and House had taken the score to 156 when House was caught for 59.

Scott Dalrymple (0) only lasted 7 balls, but Pete Harris made a useful 22 before being run out.

Mark Tippler (1) didn't last long, but Andy Smith (2) stayed long enough to see Burnham home.

Driver finished 90 not out to cap a brilliant individual performance and lead his side to victory.
