Somerset Cricket League Division Two

Burnham 72-2 beat North Newton 71 by eight wickets

A DESTRUCTIVE bowling display fired Burnham to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over North Newton on Saturday.

The Burnham attack was on top form, ripping through the Newton line-up to bowl the hosts out for just 71 in 42.5 overs.

There were three wickets apiece for Mike Green (3-8) and Brian Brogden (3-15), while Rob Driver (2-18) and Ed Booth (1-24) were also in the wickets.

In reply, Burnham cruised to their target with relative ease, reaching 72-2 inside 23 overs.

Toby Keast (23), Dave Worthington (16) and Rob Driver (16no) saw Burnham home and sealed a seventh league win of the season.

Bowling first, the Burnham new ball pairing of Green and Driver got to work early, dismissing five of the top six in quick succession and bowling 11 maidens between them in 24 overs.

Only A. Jenkins (29no) withstood the Burnham attack as he carried his bat while the wickets tumbled at the other end.

Brian Brogden continued his fine wicket-taking form with three more in another economical spell – as the North Newton run rate stayed below two runs per over.

G. Kyte (11) second top scored for the home side and was the last man out, as he became Brogden’s third victim of the afternoon.

Toby Keast led the Burnham reply with 23 at the top of the order and although he and Worthington were dismissed by C. Street (1-22) and A. Giradin (1-15) respectively, Driver and House had little trouble in knocking off the remaining runs.

Burnham climb to fourth in Division Two and travel to Huish and Langport on Saturday.
