Weston-super-Mare 2nd XI 185-8 beat Burnham-on-Sea 1st XI 139 by 46 runs

A MISERLY bowling display was not backed up by Burnham’s batsmen as they went down to a 46-run defeat at the hands of Weston-super-Mare’s second string on Saturday.

Weston won the toss and made a solid start having elected to bat, but P. Grant made the breakthrough for Burnham when he dismissed Jack Press for 13.

The home side’s other opener, Tom Ford, went on to make 53 and was well supported by Jamie Howson (27) and captain Matthew Kearsey (33) as Weston finished on 185-8 from 45 overs.

Each of Burnham’s bowlers recorded relatively economical figures, with K Carlson (3-31) and M Winton (3-39) taking the majority of the wickets to fall.

The away side’s reply began steadily through Pete Harris (16) and D. Worthington (23), but no Burnham batsman managed to kick on and make a match-winning score once well set.

Brad House impressed in his 30, and Winton added 15 to his earlier three-wicket haul, but Burnham were always behind the required rate and the tail offered limited resistance as the visitors were bowled out for 139 with 3.1 overs to spare.

Alex Leeks and Kearsey took three wickets each for Weston, who sit third, while Burnham are in sixth having won three and lost four of their opening seven matches.

Burnham will be looking to bounce back from their defeat as they host Long Sutton, who are two places above them, this coming Saturday.
