Sedgemoor Division 2

Burnham 8, Weston-super-Mare II 1

BURNHAM began this match as they meant to go on with a goal in the first minute.

They were up against a young Weston team two players short but, nevertheless, had to maintain their composure and concentration throughout.

They took advantage of having a strong squad with regular and positive substitutions that matched their bright start.

June England sent Kerry Harvey through on goal with a delicious pass which she fired past the keeper for the start of the rout.

Harvey then turned provider, crossing into the D for Amy Edmundson to hit home on the bounce.

Edmundson then took over with an impressive display of goal-scoring, this time dispossessing the last defender to set up a one-on-one with the keeper which she won with a strike that went in off the post.

The interval proved to be just a minor interruption as Burnham piled on the pressure in the second half, with Harvey running through and drawing out the keeper before slipping to Edmundson to tap-in for her hat-trick.

Carly Bush then got in on the act after good work out of defence by Emma Ballard.

Her pass found Sarah Johnson steaming down the right before reaching the byline and cutting the ball back for Bush to flick in at the near post.

With Louise Peace, Ali Evely and Chelsea Fisher showing great strength and stamina in midfield, Bush was able to get forward more often. She got her second and Burnham’s sixth after a neat onetwo with Harvey and when her initial shot was saved she reacted quickest to hammer in the rebound.

Weston got the consolation goal their gritty performance deserved before Burnham wrapped things up.

England finally got on the scoresheet with a determined and direct run into the heart of the D to shoot past the keeper, before Edmundson capped a player-of-the-match performance with her fourth goal.

England again showed great spirit and awareness with a storming run down the right, this time spotting Edmundson unmarked in the D and crossing perfectly for her to crash home.

l On Saturday, Burnham host second-placed Chard at King Alfred’s Sports Centre (10am start).
