BREAN Golf Club captain elect, Stuart Wills hit the shot of the day in the Turkey Betterball at Brean as he holed out his four iron second shot on the par five 14th hole for an albatross.

It was the first one of those rarest of birds in golf that had been recorded at Brean for a very long time.

It scored him five points on that hole alone as he and partner Martyn Cahill combined for a winning 43 point haul overall.

This was three ahead of the second placed duo of Jerry Brueford and Roy Fletcher who then pushed Steve and Alec Bateman back into third spot on countback over the final six holes.

Saturday's John Smith Trophy fell victim to the mid morning deluge of rain that hit Somerset.

After a short delay to the planned start time play got underway but only briefly as another torrential downpour just after quickly left the greens unplayable.

The event was abandoned and as yet any restaging date is unknown.

Ray Byatt won his first Seniors Stableford since joining Brean GC.

He carded 39 points on a cold Thursday morning and he ended up two clear of the nearest challengers.

Those challengers were made up of three players on 37 points with Charlie Hastie getting the nod for second ahead of Barrie Yearsley in third and George Stratford in fourth.
