BREAN Golf Club chairman Tony Roper defied the cold wind to win the final Monthly Stableford of the calendar year.

He was the only player to notch over 40 points on a tough day for scoring as his 41-point card took him to the top of the Division Two leaderboard and two points clear of runner-up Graham Foy.

Division One winner Steven Eley had a nervous wait for most of the afternoon to see if he prevailed in the top flight.

After being pipped at the post on more than one occasion this year, he finally won a Stableford with his 39-point score.

He only had a one-point winning margin, though, over Dave Porter.

The largest winning margin of the day came in Division Three as super Senior Pat Mullholland triumphed by four with 39 points ahead of Tony Romeo.

The Twos pot was pretty lucrative with just a couple of them being scored as Russell Shaw and Steve Mason happily shared the pot of just over £50 between them.

A healthy turnout of seniors plus a couple of ‘ringers’ turned out to play the final team event before Christmas on Thursday morning.

The modified Scramble format certainly got the teams thinking and added some pressure to the players, which some responded to better than others.

The winning team included one of the ‘ringers’ as Mike Haskins and Ken Ponter were joined by Club Professional Andrew March.

The two Seniors played very steadily and Andrew certainly enjoyed the rare luxury of nine shots to be deducted from their score.

They competed the 15 holes in a one under par gross 58, making it a nett 49, and won by just over two shots from the Dai Wood, Ian Raymond and the other ‘ringer’ in Club captain Paul Jones.

Third place went to Mike Porter, Jim McLauchlan and Ian Welch.

Following its postponement the previous week, the Seniors Turkey Trot was finally completed on a fresh but dry Tuesday morning.

The winning team consisted of Barrie Yearsley, George Stratford and Ian Raymond with a nett score of 47.9.

Runners-up were Pete Douglas, Bob Hurrell and Ray Byatt on 48.2 while, just two-tenths of a shot behind in third were Mike Allen, Tony Roper and Ian Welch.

l For the remainder of the year through until December 31, Brean Golf Club have a running Individual Stableford on which is open to both members and visitors.
