AT last Friday evenings annual presentation night, 2014 club captain Paul Jones handed over a cheque for just under £5000 to his designated captain's charity for the year, CLAPA (Cleft Lip and Palate Association) and the South West Cleft team.

CLAPA chairperson Michelle Bower and the Cleft team's lead nurse Cathy Marsh received the award which will be split equally between the two organizations.

The decision to support this cause was made by Jones following the Brean's Director of Golf Andrew March's son Logan being born with the condition in late 2013.

They received a cheque for £4912 and are pictured below with Jones and March.

In addition to that the kind hearted members also raised just over another £1000 to fund the purchase of an AED Defibrillator for the golf clubhouse which was purchased last June and now sits in place in the golf clubhouse should it ever be required. It made the grand total they raised in 2014 £5914 and for a club of Brean's size that is yet another amazing effort from them.

The annual presentation night was held in the Tavern and was very well attended with almost 100 people enjoying the evenings food and entertainment.

The Most Improved Golfer was Simon Baunton who collected no less than nine awards on the night.

His handicap during the calendar year dropped dramatically and continues to do so in 2015.

Golfer of the Year went to current club captain Stuart Wills - he won five events and reduced his handicap from seven to almost four, which is no mean feat considering he played just over 30 competition rounds last year.

It was also awarded for the sportsman like way he accepted his disastrous final hole and subsequent scorecard error which cost him the club championship.

Club person of the year was Matt Haskins, who was a massive support to captain Paul Jones throughout his year. The final presentation of the evening went to club champion Steve Bateman who was receiving the Trophy for the sixth time but the first since 2010.

Barrie Tucker recorded the leading score in the March Medal with a superb nett 66 despite being out in the worst of the wet and windy weather that hit the Brean course on Saturday morning.

He took the Division Two honours from Nigel Hodges who had a 68.

Top spot in Division One went to Pete Barton but only after a back nine countback with Steve Eley who matched his nett 69.

Alan Marshal won Division Three with a nett 71 ahead of Mo Sanders who had a nett 73.

Finally, Tony Higgins will represent Brean Golf Club alongside professional Andrew March in the Regional Final of the National PGA Pro Am.

He won the club qualifying round with a 39 point score helped greatly by an eagle two at the eighth hole, which netted him five points on that hole alone.
