THE Upton and Scott Trophy saw a change this year from its usual format of being a matchplay knockout event. Pairs contested a qualifying round using the Stableford scoring system and the leading four pairs move forward to play Semi Finals and the Final over the next 5 months.

Captain Stuart Wills and his Captain elect Andy Thomas headed the leader board with 42 points haul 2 points ahead of Tony Richards and Andy Chapple on 40.

This was decided after a countback with Stewart Garrett and Nigel Ellis also returning that score.

Steve and David Jones were the final pair to progress with 39pts.

The Jones's will now face the leading qualifiers Wills and Thomas in the first semi-final whilst the second and third placed duo's face each other in the second semi.

40 points was the leading score in May Monthly Stableford on Sunday.

Both Division Two and Three were won with that score - super Swede Mats Mattsson took the Division Two award and also notched a two which topped top up his winnings nicely.

Runner-up to him was Ron Vine on 38. Marc Birt played steadily as he matched Mattsson's score to win the Third flight.

He had a slightly larger winning margin though as he was three clear of runner-up Alan Marshall.

The biggest winning margin came from Phil Hodgson in Division One.

In a smaller than usual entry due to an Avalon League match he scored a solid 37 points to lead home Richard Triscott by six.

Debbie Windmill recovered from a difficult start to take the Ladies win ahead of Rhea Isom.

Scoring was particularly good considering the testing conditions with Club Chairman Tony Roper winning with a superb 38 points.

He was two clear of a trio of players who matched the par of 36.

With a countback used to separate them it emerged that Pat Mullholland took second ahead of Barrie Tucker with Dai Wood having to settle for fourth spot.
