SUNDAY saw Brean Golf Club’s annual Pros day competition being staged, with club pro Andrew March choosing a Texas Scramble format for the 2017 staging.

A couple of special rules were added but the challenge was just the same – to beat the pro quartet.

March had enlisted the help of former Brean assistants Dan Keitch and Roy Baker, along with Burnham and Berrow’s Graeme Biggs to try and beat the challengers.

Despite covering the course in just 58 strokes, they were headed by four other teams on the final leaderboard.

The winners on the day were the Jones quartet, featuring three generations of the family.

Eleven-year-old Millie, her dad Steve and grandfather David were joined by David’s brother Eric to produce a stunning round of 55.4 to win by over a stroke and a half.

Runners-up for the third time in a Scramble format this year were club captain David Porter, Simon Baunton, Steve Eley and Phil Hodgson, as they beat Dan Reason, Dan Williams, Matt Shaw and Jeff Read on a back nine countback.

The other team to defeat the pros were Brian Read, Tony Groves, Stewart Garrett and captain elect Mike Carter with their return of 57.1.

The previous day had seen the opening fixtures for both of the Brean Avalon League teams end in disappointing defeats.

The Division 3 side played host to The Mendip and went down on home soil by 3.5 games to 1.5.

Leighton Jenkins and Jason Kidley scored the win, with the Broom cousins, Dan and Tom, gaining the half.

The Division 5 team were away to Worlebury, and only managed to secure half a point from the five games – Adam Cox and Dave Bradley the only pair not to lose to their hosts.

Also at Brean on Saturday a Super Series Stableford was contested, with Murray Parsons returning to winning ways after a recent eye operation as he secured top spot.

He was the only player in the 35-strong field to reach 40 points as he won by one and also decreased his handicap by the same amount.

Runner-up was Richard Triscott on 39, thanks a final hole eagle three.

His three wood approach was inches from disappearing into the hole for an albatross, which would have tied Parsons.

Brian Read edged a five-way countback to take third spot on 38.

The Wadeley Plate final was played on Friday afternoon, and saw Trevor Pitt and Jordan Hills emerge victorious by a 3&2 margin.

Finally, Brean professional Andrew March recorded a runners-up finish in last Wednesday’s Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal at Shirehampton Park GC in Bristol to move into the top eight of the Total Triumph Order of Merit.
