BURNHAM & Berrow Golf Club junior member Taylor Stote has just returned from enjoying success playing for King’s College at the Independent School’s Golf Association (ISGA) Finals which took place at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, Kent.

Having qualified as the South West champions, the King’s team had a superb two days at the prestigious Royal St George’s GC – which hosted The Open in 2011 and will again in 2020 – against the best young golfing talent in Britain.

Taylor Stote had a hugely successful two days, finishing four over par to secure sixth place in the country, and winning a gold medal.

Adam Shimali and Will Chesterman both qualified into the bronze category on the leader board and helped the King’s team secure a top 20 finish.

Phil Lewis, head of golf at King’s, said: “Each of the golfers played really well and we are delighted to have done so well.

“There are a lot of talented young golfers at King’s and it is fantastic they get the opportunity like these three did to play at some of the best courses in England.”

THE first leg of the FosseBrean Trophy was played at Brean Golf Club last Tuesday.

The matches were just completed before a hefty hailstorm hit the Leisure Park, and the end result was a win for the visitors by 3.5 games to 2.5.

This meant that Ray Byatt’s men have some work to do to ensure the trophy stays in the Brean cabinet for another year, in the return fixture later in the summer.

The Seniors played their second home game in 24 hours as they welcomed the Minehead Warreners to the Leisure Park the following day.

The end result was slightly improved, as they halved the match overall, three games apiece.

In their third and final match of the week they finally recorded a win as they won their opening round of the Seniors Somerset Bowl.

With matches played on neutral territory they travelled to Taunton & Pickeridge to face the Enmore Park Seniors team.

They came out on top of a close encounter, winning by three games to two, and now move onto the next round of the inter-club county knockout.

The rejuvenated Brean Ladies team, led by Sue Wright, took on their Cannington counterparts at home in their first game of the season.

It was a cold but dry day on the coast and the match was played as an aggregate Stableford, with the home team ending the day 15 points ahead of their visitors to secure the victory.

The Upton and Scott Qualifier took place on Saturday with the leading four pairs progressing to the matchplay stage of the Greensomes competition.

A large entry of 32 pairs teed up looking for one of the semi-final spots available.

Steve Martin and David Hunter ended the day as the top seeds, as they were the only duo to reach 40 points, one ahead of a trio of 39-point scores.

Father and son partnership of Russell and Matt Shaw were the best of the 39s on a countback, ahead of Tony Richards and Andy Chapple.

Pete Barton and Dan Reason survived a late wobble to clinch fourth spot and now face the top seeds for a place in the final.

Andy Newham enjoyed one of those rare rounds of golf when everything seemed to go right for him as he claimed victory in the second annual Holiday Resort Unity Owners Golf Day.

Playing well below his 28 handicap he took full advantage to off some good bounces to return a 43-point total and take a comfortable eight-point winning margin.

Second place was a much closer affair with a back nine countback required to separate Richard Doherty and Paul Denston.

They played together and a short putt that stayed above ground on the final green would ultimately decide that Denston would beat Doherty after the countback.

Doherty did win the nearest the pin prize on the second hole, to go with third place, with Richard Jacobson winning the award for the best back nine on the day.

In the second event of the new Super Series, Ron Vine emerged victorious.

The format of the event was a Bogey and Vine finished on an impressive score of +6.

He won by one from Mats Mattsson, who was almost equally impressive on +5, with third place going to Dave Bradley (+1).
