THE annual meeting between the best ladies team and the best gentlemen at Enmore Park Golf Club, for the Kinnersley Trophy, took place on Sunday afternoon.

This is a hotly-contested competition, with bragging rights attached for the remainder of the season.

The men, captained by Paul Thorogood, looked odds-on to win when the first three matches were won by Matt Lazenby, Jake Bovingdon and Dominic Bancroft.

But the ladies’ tail wagged, as they overcame the opposition of Martyn Clapp, Martin Collard, Paul Martin and Paul Thorogood to win 4-3.

Enmore held its Gents Invitation Day on Saturday (July 8), the event being a four ball better format.

The winners, with 45 points, were Andrew Evans and Richard Maslen, ahead of Paddy Maclennan and Peter Davies (44 points) in second.

Scoring was tough in last weekend’s Medal, with only two below-par rounds played.

Kevin Dee had best nett in Division 2 with a 68, Neil Anderson topped Division 3 with a 71, and Matt Kippen produced a nett 71 to win Division 1, which was a gross 68.

The Club Night on July 4 was won by S. Rolph and H. Neal (plus Ghost) with 80 points.

They came in three shots ahead of both P. Nicholson, T. Woodley and P. Martin in second place, and B. Puddy, D. Richards and L. Townsend in third.

Saturday’s Junior Club Night involved 13 competitors, including four girls.

MEL Brown came off the course slightly disappointed as he had just made his first and only six of the day at the 18th hole in the Seniors Open, but as that was the only score all day above five on the 20 handicapper’s card he needn’t have worried much.

That still equated to a spectacular 46 point haul and brought him top spot overall by two points and with it the Bill Martin Trophy.

Brown has been in consistent form of late and played a superb round of golf to head home the large field of 72 senior golfers.

He held a two shot advantage over another Brean member Tony Romeo, whose 44 point card secured him the Veterans Trophy for the best score by an entrant over 70 years of age.

In third place was Mats Mattsson, who played alongside Romeo, and posted an impressive 41 points of his own on his scorecard.

The final Trophy of the day was awarded to Enmore Park’s Pete March, father of Brean’s director of golf Andrew, as he collected the Nicoll Trophy for his 40 point return in the 65 to 69 category.

With each player only eligible to win one prize, the Leading Visitor award was retained by Enmore Park’s Barry Smith on 38.

Bob Masterman was the best of the runners up in each of the Cups, with his 40 points finishing behind Romeo, and Brian Read finished one point shy of March’s total in the Nicoll Trophy.

Jim Puddy rounded out the prizewinners taking third spot in the Bill Martin Trophy on 39 points.

It was the largest turnout for the event for many years and it was pleasing to see so many visitors enjoying the course as well as complimenting it afterwards.

Earlier in the week, Tony Bissett had a spectacular round of 45 points to post the leading score in the Seniors Stableford.

His nearest challengers could only manage 42 points, with Ken Rouse finishing runner up to Bissett in the Division Two leaderboard.

Lesley Millard celebrated her birthday with a win in the Ladies July Medal on Tuesday.

She played steadily for her nett 71, which ended three clear of Gail Mason and Lyn Bird who took second and third respectively.

A duo from Stockwood Vale filled the top two spots in the Brean Ladies Open played on Thursday in conjunction with the Seniors Open event.

Lesley Moore and Kathy Shiells both returned 37 points so countback was required to separate them, with the verdict going to Moore.

Gail & Steve Mason won a closely contested Jubilee Plate on Saturday with a score of 37 points, while Nigel Ellis and Phil Barry took top spot in the eighth round of the 2017 Super Series.

In the betterball Stableford format they posted an impressive 47 points but only enjoyed a one point advantage at the end of the day on another day of low scoring.

Taking second place after a countback was Jim McLauchlan and Pete Dunn with a better back nine score than Ray Rushman and Tony Groves, who ended up third.

Graham Foy was the only player to reach the 40 point mark in Sunday’s Monthly Stableford.

BURNHAM & Berrow Golf Club’s George Ryall finished as runner-up in the third round of the Total Triumph Summer Series at Filton last week.

He was unfortunate to be beaten, as he recorded a par score of 70 that was topped only by Mark Pitcher, who set a new Professional course record in winning the competition.

The end of Ryall’s round cost him dear, as he went from three-under on the 16th tee to level par going into the clubhouse due to dropped shots on the final three holes.

The final round takes place at Mendip Spring Golf Club on Wednesday, August 16.
