MATS Mattsson and Kevin Davies were the winners of the Silver Jubilee Cup at Brean Golf Club on Saturday.

The format of the event is an aggregate medal competition so the pressure is on both players to return a good score.

On a day when scoring wasn’t particularly low, a couple of sub par scores was always going to be competitive and when Mattsson added his 68 to Davies’ 67 it wasn’t to be beaten.

They ended four strokes clear of runners up Leighton Jenkins and Mel Brown on 68 and 71 respectively.

The best individual score of the day came from Clive Goode.

With the saying ‘You can’t keep a good(e) man down’ ringing very true, he impressively recorded a nett 66 after three weeks in hospital following some health issues but his partner was unable to help him through to victory overall.

A team led by Club Professional Andrew March headed to Weston-super-Mare on Sunday to take part in the annual Quad Cup.

The quadrangular match is now played for in memory of Terry Murray, who had connections with all four clubs that compete and founded the event many years ago.

The hosts Weston were the winners for the second year running on four points and just like 2016 the Brean team ended up as runners up on three.

Isle of Wedmore beat Tall Pines for third spot but Tall Pines will be hoping for a better result in 12 months’ time when it is their turn to host the event.

Brean’s winning pairs were Matt and Russ Shaw, Chris Fairchild and John Cullinan and ‘Welsh wonders’ Leighton Jenkins and Jason Kidley.

Back at Brean, Nigel Hodges won the Super Series Bogey competition on Sunday after a countback with Nigel Ellis.

Both players handed in scores of +3 but Hodges enjoyed the better back nine to secure the win. Martyn Cahill was third on +2.

Lyn Bird won the Ladies September Stableford with an impressive 36-point score.

Despite failing to score on three holes during her round, she won with a few points to spare from Lesley Millard with Linda Edmondson taking third.

Off the course on Saturday, the Ladies’ section, headed by Beverly Cranley, organised a very successful Macmillan Coffee Morning in the clubhouse.

With much baking (and some faking!) they raised a superb amount of £437 for the cause.

Pete Lock won the Veterans’ Trophy on Thursday morning thanks to his 40-point Stableford return.

He was the only player to reach that mark as he won by two from George Stratford and John Cranley.

Stratford won a back nine countback with Cranley to decide the silver and bronze positions.

Captain David Pascoe’s Enmore Seniors secured an impressive and welcome victory away on the Isle of Wedmore course romping home by 6-2.

The winning pairings were Doug Read with John Newell (6&5), Chris Willsteed with Mike Sullivan (6&4), Peter Farnell with Dave Cousins (3&2), Keith Calvert with John Patterson (2&1), Mike Cavill with Ray Hancock (2&1) and finally, Tony Pomeroy with John Rigler (1 up).

The next day, Enmore hosted the seniors from Tiverton with captain-elect Graham Pain in charge and what a momentous day it was.

Pain picked up his first win when he has been captain for the day and, not for the first time, he secured the ‘nearest the pin’ bottle of wine to complete the occasion.

Enmore won the match 4-3 and their winning pairings were Graham Pain with Tony Pomeroy (2&1), Paul Waplington with Doug Read and Chris Willsteed with John Rigler (both 1 up), while two pairs secured important half points - namely, Steve Lukins with Mike Taylor and Ray Hancock with David Taylor.

The Mixed Atkin Trophy was played on Sunday and won by Danny O’Loughlin and Julie Stafford with 45 points.

Saturday’s monthly medal was won by Keith Miller net 69 in Division 1.
Division 2 was won by Colin Chapple, with 69, while John Taylor (70) carried off Division 3.

Enmore Royals travelled to East Devon and won their Club match 4-2.
