BREAN moved through to the quarter-finals of the Somerset Bowl by the narrowest of margins on Saturday at wet Clevedon.

Their opponents, Tall Pines, held a one-hole advantage in the deciding game with just the 18th hole to play but brothers Paul and Steve Jones pounced on an errant tee shot to claim the hole and take the tie into extra-time.

They then held their form to claim a 3-2 success.

Brean now face Minehead in the last eight at a venue yet to be decided.

The Seniors also tasted success as they brought the Kingbrean Trophy back to Brean.

After taking a healthy lead into the second leg at Kingweston, they held their opponents to a 3-3 draw on the day and, with it, enjoyed a 7- 3 overall victory.

Roger Phillips was the winner of the last seniors competition before the layout gets altered at Brean.

He posted a net 68 on his way to claiming the third and final round of the Seniors Captain’s Cup.

Peter Douglas and Barrie Yearsley finished second and third, respectively.

Tony Romeo battled the wind on Saturday in the Pro Shop Stableford but fared better than most as he ended the day in first place after his card of 37 points.

Romeo’s playing partner Barrie Tucker was the runner-up just one point behind the winner as was third-placed Vince Ford but he lost out to Tucker on countback.

The Open Threeball event on Sunday was won by the visiting trio of Kippens from Enmore.

Father Bob and two of his sons carded a total of 134 to win by a shot from club captain Stewart Garrett, Nigel Ellis and a useful late replacement in the shape of club champion Roy Baker.

Another father and son team, in the form of Gordon and Craig Wheelaghan, with Charlie Huggins matched the runners-up score but fell one shy after a countback on the closing nine holes.

Tuesday will see the delayed staging of the popular Pro Celebrity Am at Brean when over 30 teams are set to tackle the new layout for the first time.

The new holes have been designed by professionals David Haines and Andrew March and constructed by greenkeeper Robin Williams and his team.
