SOMERSET captain Marcus Trescothick has urged his side to carry their impressive one-day form into the four-day arena as they prepare to take on Worcestershire in a must-win LV County Championship clash, starting tomorrow.

Trescothick and Somerset return to Championship action knowing that a victory will be another crucial step towards ensuring that they remain in the top flight for the 2016 season.

Currently Somerset are sixth in the table with 120 points from 11 matches, with a game in hand on seventh-placed Worcestershire who have 112 from 12, and fifth placed Notts with 149 - meaning a win would open up breathing space between them and the three clubs below them.

Looking ahead to Friday’s encounter, skipper Marcus Trescothick, who hit 127 for the Seconds earlier in the week said: “We have still got a bit of work to do - it has been a while since we played red ball cricket so we need to get back into the groove pretty quickly.

“We have done well in our last three white ball games and that winning feeling is vital when you come into this stage of the season so we want to keep that going.”

Elsewhere, Somerset Seconds play their biggest game of the season so far when they host Durham at Taunton Vale on Friday in the semi-final of the 50 over Trophy competition (10.30am).

The young Second XI side has enjoyed considerable success in all formats of the game this season and will be hoping to reach the final next Thursday.

Second XI coach Steve Snell said: “I am really excited for the guys and it’s all about opportunities to play in a semi-final.

"Given Somerset’s history of not quite getting over the line in one-day cricket in the last few years it’s great to see how these guys perform under pressure.

“We will be keeping with our young players and giving them opportunities at the top of the order with bat and ball. It would be really nice to get to the final but at this level it’s about giving young players like Tim Rouse and Eddie Byrom an opportunity to play in really competitive situations, which is great.

Snell added: “It’s disappointing that we haven’t been able to pick George Bartlett who has done well, because he has been away for a couple of weeks.”

The other Second XI Trophy semi-final is between Derbyshire and Surrey.
