SOMERSET batsman Tom Abell has notched up his first century for Fremantle in Western Australia - but it wasn't enough to prevent them from slumping to a 58-run defeat to Claremont Nedlands.

The 21-year-old, who was named as the LV=Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2015, is spending the winter in Perth where he is training hard and playing Grade A cricket.

In reply to Claremont Nedlands' first innings total of 323-8 off 90 overs, in which Abell took 2-66 off 15 overs, he opened the batting and scored 111 off 185 balls which included 14 fours - but his side were 265 all out.

Abell said: "Naturally, I was absolutely delighted to get a hundred for Fremantle, however I was disappointed I didn't go on and win the game for us.

“But the best thing about it for me was that I started to see a few things I've been working at coming into my game, which is a real positive for me.”

“Coming over here, I have to admit I felt a bit of pressure as the overseas player, although I have been really lucky to have joined a fantastic club who have been brilliant with me.

"I hope I can put in a few match win in performances in the next few weeks.”

Abell isn’t alone in Perth, with Somerset teammate Jack Leach  also spending the winter playing grade cricket in the same division.

Abell continued: “Aside from this, I have seen plenty of ‘Leachy’ and we are training well together which has been ideal, but Perth is a great place to be over the winter.

“I feel like we are feeding off each other and I for one am gaining a lot from the experience.”

The Taunton duo will be joined by a third member of the Somerset team when Lewis Gregory flies out to Perth on December 12.

Abell said: “It is great news to hear that Lewis will be joining us as well so I'm really looking forward to catching up with him and spending part of the winter with two cracking Somerset lads.”
