SOMERSET completed their blemish-free sequence of friendly fixtures with a crushing 506-run victory over Oxford MCCU at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Roelof van der Merwe stole the show on day one with a superb double century, helping himself to 209 from just 166 balls as the hosts motored to 452-8, to which Lewis Gregory contributed 60 and Jamie Overton added a cameo 45 that included four 6's.

By the end of the opening day the visitors were reeling on 51/7, with the wickets shared by Somerset's four-pronged pace attack consisting of Gregory, Tim Groenewald and the Overton twins.

After mopping up the tail early on day two, the hosts batted again and quickly built on their first-innings lead of 380.

Marcus Trescothick and Tom Abell added 37 for the first wicket before the captain fell for 16, which brought Peter Trego to the wicket.

The all-rounder went on to make 161 at comfortably more than a run a ball and put on 182 for the fifth wicket with Jack Leach, who made the most of a rare chance to enjoy some time in the middle and scored 65.

Having declared with the score on 277/5 - a lead of 657 - the hosts then tore into the visiting batsmen again and quickly had the students in trouble at 51/5.

Malcolm Lake delayed the inevitable with an impressive 65, but Somerset wrapped up the victory late on day two to give themselves an unexpected day off ahead of Friday's Championship opener against Essex.

The second innings wickets were again shared between the bowlers, with Craig and Jamie Overton picking up three apiece, Leach chipping in with two and Gregory and Groenewald adding one each.
