SOMERSET have called George Bartlett and Tom Banton into their 13-man squad to face Yorkshire in Taunton as a result of Eddie Byrom's shoulder injury.

The pair have each made centuries for the 2nd XI in Kent this week - Banton making tons in successive days, including a remarkable 248 at better than a run a ball - and look set to battle it out to replace Byrom.

Matt Renshaw is likely to move to the top of the order, where he is more used to batting in First Class and international cricket, with Banton or Bartlett ready to slot in further down.

Bartlett, 20, played in Somerset's final four Championship matches last season, scoring 100 runs with a top score of 28, while Banton, 19, is awaiting his First Class debut.

On Byrom, head coach Jason Kerr said: "It is not as serious as we first thought and he is seeing a specialist on Monday so we are waiting for a complete diagnosis, but hopefully it won’t be too long.

"It's great to have the guys putting pressure on and scoring runs in the 2nd XI - that's what we want."

Bowling-wise, Jamie Overton will miss out as he recovers from a side strain picked up while bowling for the 2nd XI this week.

Kerr said: “I really feel for Jamie, it’s been a long eight or nine months for him.

“It’s only a minor setback, and we hope to have him back sooner rather than later.”

Captain Tom Abell added: "It's frustrating for everyone, but no-one more so than Jamie himself - I have real sympathy for him.

"We are looking forward to having him back fit and firing."

Abell also praised new man Renshaw, who became the 14th man in Somerset history to score a century on debut - and the first since Alviro Petersen in 2013 - with his crucial unbeaten 101 against Worcestershire in Somerset's victorious season opener.

"Matt's been fantastic, he's settled in really well," the captain said.

"To come out and play as he did, really taking the attack to the bowlers, when conditions were as tough as they were on that first day just shows his quality.

"There's no better way to introduce himself to Somerset than with a debut century."

Another victory this weekend would see Somerset win their first two Championship matches for the first time since 1993, though Yorkshire arrive as the early pace-setters having beaten Nottinghamshire by 164 runs last time out.

Kerr said: “I’m very pleased - it was a great start.

“I think it will be a different surface this weekend - I’m expecting a dryer wicket.”
