THE SOMERSET Rebels have been crowned the 2013 Premier League Champions after a 49-44 victory over the Edinburgh Monarchs in the Play-Off final second-leg at the Oaktree Arena on Monday (October 29).

The result clinched a 92-89 aggregate win for the Rebels, who went into Monday night's meeting trailing by two points.

Somerset quickly wiped out that deficit with a 5-1 heat win in the opening race courtesy of Kyle Newman and Jason Doyle.

But Edinburgh refused to yield and the Rebels were forced to wait until the final race of the night to be confirmed as League Champions.

By heat four Somerset had moved themselves into a six-point lead on the night, but they were immediately pegged back by the Monarchs - Craig Cook and Max Fricke combining for a maximum 5-1 heat advantage, which brought the aggregate score back to all-square.

The Rebels then gradually started to pull clear and by the half-way stage of affairs had opened up a six-point lead on the night.

This was soon extended out to 10 points with a second 5-1 race win of the night in heat nine.

Nick Morris and Alex Davies did the honours for Somerset, with Davies throwing Edinburgh's Theo Pijper a dummy to move through into second place behind Morris.

With four races to go Somerset held a seven-point lead on the night, to put them five points up on aggregate.

A 4-2 race win in heat 13 saw Somerset with one hand on the Championship trophy as they extended their aggregate lead out to seven points with just two heats remaining.

Alex Davies' second-place finish in heat 14 all but assured Somerset of the title, before Jason Doyle mimicked Davies in the final heat to crown the Somerset Rebels the 2013 Premier League Champions.

Somerset Promoter Debbie Hancock said afterwards: “After coming so close to winning the title last year you wonder if you will ever get the chance again, but we have now laid that ghost to rest.

“The guys have been absolutely brilliant all year, and they did it again for one last time.

“Edinburgh really made us work hard for our win, as we knew they would, we have had some terrific battles in our matches with them this year, and all credit to the Monarchs and their supporters for making it such a great Final.”
