Somerset County League First Division

Westfield 2, Burnham United 1

BURNHAM's new boss Luke Hussey said he will take the positives out of his team's performance despite seeing them fall to a 2-1 defeat.

With a changed line up through injury and illness, the midfield three of Ed Lamb, Mike Stevens and Simon Slocombe kept Burnham on top and started to open up the Westfield defence down the left flanks where Claude Bitton was giving the fullback a torrid time.

Burnham looked solid at the back with Dave Bidgood and Russ Holley repelling any Westfield attack. Just before the half hour mark, a counter attack that started with Elliot Lamb in the left back position and ended up with Kane Powell busting down the right wing and saw the winger play a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Steve Leaf who finished clinically from just inside the penalty area.

Burnham continued to look comfortable and it was only an unlucky deflection in defence that gave Westfield their first chance which they took to level the score. Burnham seemed to be set to go into half time even when in the final minute a long cross from Westfield was headed home giving Will Lamb no chance and they trailed 2-1.

After the break, Burnham continued from where they left off as Will Lamb became the catalyst of many chances , of which Leaf was unable to take.

The visitors pressed for the equaliser but they kept being denied and even Mike Stevens' 25-yard screamer was somehow palmed over the crossbar as the match ended without any further score.
