Burnham II 65, Martock 0

BURNHAM bounced back from last week’s defeat with a comprehensive win over Martock on Saturday.

Matt Slater’s side had chosen to play with the wind although the terrain was uphill and with the momentum it was only a matter of time before a penalty infringement happened. It did, and Alex Watkins stepped up to put the first points on the board.

That soon became 6-0 when turnover instrumented by Phil Collings and Ash Morris was recycled out to Lee Berry who passed through Chris Lee to Matt Love to race across the line for one of his two tries of the day; Watkins stepped up to the mark and added to his tally.

Burnham extended their lead when the ball was collected by Watkins who embarked on a solo run, dummied the Martock full back and finished off a fine try.

There was time for Collings to score and Watkins to convert again before half time.

The home side remained on top in the second half and, from a lineout, Mike Nash distributed the ball to Chris Lee who had Rob in direct support who made no mistake this time as he crashed over the line. Conversion missed.

Ed Lewis settled into the tempo of the game when he found himself in the ideal attacking position ten metres from the line and made no mistake as he drove the ball over for a fine try.

The opposition did not falter in their efforts to exploit at every opportunity but Burnham’s scoring machine rolled on and further tries were added by Watkins, O’Regan and Rio.

Captain Matt Slater rounded off the win to crash through four defenders and cover 15 metres to the line.

Man of the match: Alex Watkins.

l Next week, the team travel to Minehead.
