SPORTING matches were decimated at the weekend as frozen pitches, snow and poor driving conditions meant that the fixture list took another wintry hit.

Burnham United's match against mid-table side Castle Cary was one of the victims to the weather and they will hope to get back playing this weekend when they travel to Purnell Sports.

Berrow were not in action as they had a free gameweek but they will be hoping to take on Shirehampton at home on Saturday.

The team are sitting pretty at the top of the Somerset County League Premier Division and boast a nine-point gap at the summit.

Last season, the team were also in a similarly good position but tailed off due to injuries and unavailability's so they will be hoping to keep up the good run in the second half of the season.

In the Taunton and District Saturday League, Highbridge Town's clash with fellow league strugglers Alcombe Rovers was postponed, Town Reserves were called off at The Merry Monk and Predators home tie with Dulverton Town was also cancelled.

It has been a contrasting season for both Highbridge and Predators as Town prop up the table but Predators are progressing well in third place and ten points off top spot.

On Saturday, Highbridge are at home to North Petherton, their Reserves are away to Redgate and Predators are at home to Alcombe Rovers.

All fixtures in the Weston and District League were postponed due to poor weather and unplayable grounds leaving league officials looking at the prospect of having to accommodate the backlog of fixtures which date back to postponements in November, December and this month.

That meant that Berrow Reserves, Burnham United 'A' and 'B', Wedmore and their Reserves side and King Alfred Sports Centre were out of action.

In rugby, both Burnham sides saw their matches fall foul to the wintry weather conditions at the weekend.

The first team were due to face Chosen Hill at home but will now have to wait until this Saturday to get in action when they take a trip to second placed Barton Hill.

The second string were called off for their trip to Minehead and will now look forward to a derby clash with nearby rivals Morganians.
